Cleaning out your gutters - 3 reasons why.

With the recent Bush fire threat, I have taken calls from a few clients concerned about leaves in their gutters. Clearing the gutters is one of those jobs that most people keep putting off. It's only until they see plants growing from the gutter that they realise it might be time to do something about it!

Clearing out gutters is an important preventative measure if in bush fire prone areas
Gutter cleaning

There are three compelling reasons why you should clear your gutters regularly:

1. As the leaves, dirt and debris breaks down, it settles in the gutter and holds moisture. With prolonged moisture present, gutters will rust out much faster.

2. The broken down debris, mixed with fresh leaves and other matter can combine and block your down pipes. This can cause the gutters to overflow, sometimes back into the eaves causing water damage. If left for a long time, it can be difficult to clear these blockages

3. If you live in a bush fire zone, then regularly clearing of your gutters is a must do. Dried leaves and debris in your gutters are a common source of primary ignition from either falling embers or extreme radiant heat

There are also other areas on a roof that can harbour leaves, bark and plant matter. These include flashing valleys, flat roofs such as adjoining carports, pergolas or any roof structures with a very low pitch. These areas my not all be visible from the ground around your house.

So clearing out the gutters should not be a job that you keep putting off. If unsure, or not safe to attempt yourself, there are many professional services available for gutter cleaning. So make the move now and in the long run it will save you money.
